Dieting Guide: Introduction To Nutrition

In this day and age everyone is talking about diets. The media is saturated with diet information; what is healthy what is not, who has the secrets to creating a new slimmer you and who doesn't. No matter what fads and new concepts come and go, we always go back to the simple approach of maintaining a healthy diet and moderate activity for a healthier you.

Dieting Guide

There is a plethora of diet plans out there today that cater to people with varying restrictions. There's low carb, good carb, or no carb options. There's low calorie and fat options, and then there's those prepared food diet plans out there that attempt to take the thinking out of it for you by shipping you what you need to consume on these diets. Finally, there are those plans that work on a balanced diet, restricting only those non essential foods to consuming in moderation. I'm sure you've seen them out there; there's a point for this food, or this food group has that color code. Deciding to go with a preset diet plan is not a bad option, and works for many people. The best options out there tend to be those that emphasize a balanced diet though, as opposed to completely avoiding certain food groups. Who can really say that they're never going to eat a piece of bread again, or have a piece of pie? Certainly not this writer.

For those that are more interesting in doing their own thing, focusing on nutrition and setting their own plans can work well too. Making an appointment with a nutrionalist is a great idea to brush up on your healthy food choice education. Learning from the nutritionalist what kinds of food to choose, and what kinds to avoid can arm you with enough information to go out and be the healthier you that you're striving to be.

Regardless of what avenue you choose (except for those pepackaged meal plan options of course) you'll need to tackle the grocery store. Sit down each week and write out your meal plans before you go to the grocery store. This will lessen the chance of making bad choices. Write your list and stick to it! Focus on fresh vegetables and fruits, lean cuts of meat, and low calorie treats to satisfy your sweet tooth. Stay away from overly processed foods, those complete meal in a box options out there. Sure, they seem easy and quick, but don't provide you what you need from your food. The more you start to look at food as your fuel the better off you will be. You wouldn't put second rate fuel into your car just because it was quicker and easier would you?

There are many ways to get to a healthier you, making the right food choices is really only part of the battle. You also need to be active and exercise. The actual activity can vary in intensity, and it may surprise you how many calories you can burn in a relatively small amount of time. For example; did you know that following a thirty minute exercise video four times a week can burn 720 calories? Not too bad for carving out thirty minutes of your day four times a week!

So, go out there and brush up on your nutritional education, read up on a diet plan or two, and watch what you're putting on your plate a little more closely. You may surprise yourself just what a few small changes can do to create a healthier you.
